My take on the iPad

The iPad has officially gone on sale in the states over the Easter weekend, it is due for release in the UK later this month and I have to say that I’m very interested in getting my hands on this latest piece of Apple wizardry.

I already have a 15″ Macbook Pro, that I predominantly use for the web, e-mail, Football Manager, script-writing in Celtx, video editing in Final Cut Studio and watching episodes of shows like Caprica that I’ve downloaded.

I own an iPhone 3G 8GB which takes care of my mobile audio and video needs, as well as giving me all of my e-mail from GMail and my personal domains where-ever I am. I sync what I need on a daily/weekly basis but rarely do I fill the device up with TV episodes or films.

So where does the iPad fit in then? For me, I’d prefer a lighter device for  watching video and browsing the web. If I’m on the move and I want to watch the latest Caprica instalment, I’d prefer not to watch it on a small mobile screen, and I don’t really want to take the laptop *everywhere*. I like the idea of picking up a lighter device in the morning to check The Guardian or edit my fantasy football team over breakfast. Staying in a Wi-Fi enabled hotel or over at a friends for the weekend? No need to bring the MBP and all the accessories; just grab the iPad and tap away.

Quick, simple and no need to constantly upset the video editing/gaming set-up on the desk. Granted, it is essentially a massive iPod Touch, and the eBook facility doesn’t interest me in the slightest, but as a media consumption and general communication tool I think it will blow almost everything else away.

I’m not an Apple fan boi by any stretch of the imagination, but I can see myself investing in the product and possibly buying my mother one to solve her ‘I need the internet in the lounge!’ complaints.

What do you think? Is it a waste of time or do you feel the iPad would enrich your media/communication experience?

Academic schmemic

I’m into my third week now on the Futureworks TV & Film diploma here in Manchester, and after only five nights of lectures on the course I’m glad that I made the decision I did back in January to quit University and find private training.

I never really talked all that much about the decision, and it was something I always wanted to blog about, but never did. That doesn’t mean I wasn’t afraid to talk about it. Continue Reading

Documentary decision

For the past few years I’ve been trying to get to a point where I can produce (mostly comprising stock footage, photos etc) my own 9/11 Truth documentary. In the last six months I’ve got to a stage where I have several pages of script written, but due to a sheer lack of time to write an entire feature length script without constantly procrastinating and getting side-tracked, I had something of a revelation whilst cooking dinner the other evening.

The premise of the documentary is strip away the speculation around what happened before, during and after 9/11 and focus on the facts. These events have become something of a specialist subject for me over the years, and as a true skeptic I always look for facts to support any conspiracy theory. The bottom line is that there is a great deal that the general public do not know,  and that is for the most part down to a complete failure of epic proportions by the U.S/Global media to actually behave like proper investigative journalists.

If you spent just half an hour of your time on a site like 911research.wtc7.net you’d find yourself asking a lot of questions, and I want to make an effort to produce something that will ultimately make more people ask themselves those very same questions. After all, I believed the official version of events myself until I looked into things more closely.

So, what am I going to do?

The decision is to spend five minutes on each key point, and produce episodic content rather than a feature length documentary film. The clips will be produced in chronological order i.e. events before 9/11 will be covered first and I’m aiming to knock out somewhere between twelve and eighteen episodes.

I’ll be blogging more about this over the coming weeks as I want to have the first finished before May.

Watch the Business of Sport debate

The debate actually turned out to be good, and I’m happy that Mr. Stevens and I went along. Caught some interesting Manchester City/John Terry gossip that I’m contemplating sharing with the papers as well.

You can watch the debate below; should be live for another 28 days or so. Paul and I are in the United shirts and Green & Gold scarves; yours truly in the glasses. Shame I didn’t get an immediate answer to my question, but it got answered eventually!

Welcome any comments about the debate!

Business in Sport

Today is day two of my ‘Very Long and Tiring Week ™’, but I’m delighted to welcome my partner in crime HRH Paul Stevens to Manchester this evening to join me in the audience for the BBC ‘Business in Sport’ event that is being broadcast on BBC News (24?) and BBC Radio 5 Live from 8pm. The recent business dealings of Manchester United, Portsmouth and Liverpool will feature heavily no doubt.

Mark Pougatch, presenter of 5 Live’s flagship football programming is hosting the event at the Manchester Convention Centre at GMEX. The BBC Sport & Business editors are due to appear amongst other guests. Given that the event also coincides with day one of the annual Soccerex Europe conference which is also held at the same venue, I’m hoping that some big names are pulled into the debate.

I doubt however that David Gill, Chief Executive of Man United will appear. He’ll want to confine himself to the more comfortable and pressure free surroundings of the Soccerex conference on Wednesday, where he is a guest speaker and I believe he will be attempting to staunchly defend the Glazer take-over and subsequent bond issue etcetera.

Unfortunately, £795.00 to heckle is a little pricey.

I’ll be tweeting the event (with pictures) on my Twitter account, and it promises to be an interesting evening.
