Nick Griffin and the BBC’s dilemma

Well, I’ve just spent an hour watching one of the most cringe worthy yet compelling pieces of television I have seen for quite some time. I swear I had several flashbacks to when I was viewing series one of ‘The Office’ during ‘Question Time’ this evening.

Nick Griffin is without a doubt one of the most deceitful, racist, smug and deluded politicians I have ever seen in the almost twenty-nine years that I have been on this planet. I despise him and everything the British National Party stand for. I also feel sorry for those in the ethnic minorities who have been targeted by the bile he and his party have been spewing, as well as the families of those who lost their lives during the WW2 conflict at the hands of Hitler’s Nazi regime, as well as the survivors, that he has so utterly offended.

Regardless, however, I have always been of the firm belief that Nick Griffin should of been allowed on BBC ‘Question Time’ this evening. Free press, free speech, democratic process…they are all wonderful concepts and we should protect and embrace them. I understand the point many have made about his presence on ‘Question Time’ only benefiting his party with free exposure and aiding the promotion of the tolerance of racism. However if you watched the programme this evening, you’ll of seen how utterly ridiculous Nick Griffin was made to look tonight. If you don’t think he was torn apart and made to look a fool, then you should have a check-up with your GP immediately.

As a communications student, I’m learning, as recently as this afternoon, about the moral and ethical debates that have to take place in media production offices regarding these issues for these kind of programmes. I believe that the BBC producers and those in the upper echelons made the right call, and I sincerely hope that hardcore BNP fans aside, those who have recently voted for the BNP to vent their anger at the mainstream parties will see the error of their ways and make a more sensible decision at the ballot box next time.

Auntie, you got it spot on. Face the controversies head-on as it makes for scintillating viewing.

Good night, and good luck.
