The (kind of) calm before the storm

After a week without internet, I’m back online as I arrive home from a wonderful weekend in Manchester that followed my first five evenings living in this very student house I’m sat in right now.

So far, other than having a week delay on my student loan and having to wait an entire week to get online in this room, my introduction to student life (albeit with a fairly quiet Freshers Week) has been pretty superb and I’ve really settled in quite quickly; it’s just that tomorrow, the real work begins.

In short, I’m absolutely terrified about tomorrow. Of course, this is completely unjustified and I’m just fretting for the sake of it, but I am an interesting mix of incredibly nervous and incredibly excited about my first class.

From what I’ve seen and heard so far, the department really is a kick-ass intellectual beast, and these folks really do know what they’re talking about. I’m looking forward to learning, meeting the folks on the course and getting some good old fashioned inspiration. It still doesn’t make me any less nervous however.

The thing is, I have and always will be a big game player. I deliver my best under pressure, as is the way I am. And the irony is, my dear readers, that having sacrificed so much to come this far, I’m sat here wondering whether I’m going to cut it in the big league. College, for all the annoying things about it, was an immensely practical experience and was fairly light on academic learning. University is of course different, and I’ll be interested to see how I’ll handle a first semester that is 100%  academic. Oh Mrs Magoo, you taught thee well.

I look back now on the summer of 2007, and I really can’t believe I’m here. I sacrificed my lifestyle, my earnings, even a place of my own so I could go to college and get the qualification I needed to get onto this course. As my mother said in a text earlier ‘you’ve worked hard for this so enjoy it’. Quite right she is too. The last two years have quite possibly been two of the hardest of my life, but just because I’ve busted my balls already doesn’t mean I’m going to stop now.

My bag is packed, almost the entire interwebs have been printed and put into folders, I have more pens than every Rymans in the Yorkshire region put together and there really isn’t anything to do now other than sleep. Keeping regular, this university blog I will be.

BA (Hons) Cinema & Photography, here I come. Stopping at Subway first though.

Good night, and good luck.
