iPod to iPhone musings

Well I finally made the jump that has been inevitable for some time. Ordered the iPhone 3G 8GB on O2 pay monthly at the beginning of the week, took delivery on Thursday and my Apple gadget transformation is now complete. Somewhere in the back of my head I hear Steve Jobs laughing…

Anyhoo, I have to say being a former iPod Touch owner makes the iPhone experience not quite as amazingly different as it would be for someone moving from just having a regular mobile handset. Yes, I’ve been fannying around getting my applications installed and arranging them on my workspaces, and yes I’ve been busy getting all my contacts set-up ready for when my PAC code transfer is complete and I can use my ported number on the device; but at the end of the day this iPhone is still a glorified iPod Touch to me.

Take away the phone functionality, and it’s an iPod Touch. With the phone functionality, it means I don’t have to carry two devices around with me. On this one device I can call, txt, e-mail, surf, check my calendar, update my blog, Twitter, Facebook, get to my iTunes library and much more all in one place….let’s hope I don’t loose the bloody thing!

It is a shame that I couldn’t afford a 32GB iPhone 3GS, but the thing I like about having an 8GB device is that it’ll teach me to only sync what I need rather than attempting to squeeze all my digital media onto one device. For example, I was proud that I could fit the entire new Battlestar Galactica (all four seasons plus pilot, Razor etc) onto the iPod Touch, but now I’ll only sync what I want to watch on any given journey or stop-over. If I have to plan my video viewing in advance, then so be it.
