Eeek, total Epic Fail on blogging lately. Want to pick up the pace again and get some consistent blog posts going! I’m deeply concerned about the lack of sci-fi TV available at the moment, it’s proving to be a bit of a dodgy year in that respect.
Having lost my beloved Battlestar Galactica recently after five years of what I personally regard as the finest, darkest and most dramatic sci-fi television ever created, my weekly viewing is already affected. Also, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles has just finished season two, with a brilliant season finale that is leaving me begging for a season three; if Fox commission it of course. So, two shows down already!
Then we have the output of BBC Wales, that is much reduced this year. With Doctor Who restricted to a handful of hour long ‘special’ episodes as opposed to a full thirteen episode run, and Torchwood lasting only five episodes with the ‘Children of Earth’ mini-series that is broadcast in June, again instead of a full thirteen episode run, there is a distinct lack of Beeb sci-fi to enjoy.
Right now the only thing I have to fill the sci-fi void is Dollhouse, Joss Whedon’s latest endeavour. I’ve watched the pilot as well as episode two, and early indications are that it has potential. I like the whole concept of agents that can be implanted with different personalities for different missions, and the show brings up moral and ethical dilemmas very early on that look like will play out as the season goes on. It’s up to episode ten now, and I’ve got some catching up to do. Frankly it’s my only hope for my sci-fi fix every week.
The Battlestar Galactica prequel series ‘Caprica’ is now available for download via the usual torrent sources, and should be available on DVD from the usual retailers in the next couple of months. I’ll be reviewing the pilot sometime over the weekend, but from what I’ve seen of the opening twenty minutes it certainly has potential.
Good night, and good luck.
