Left 4 Dead

I’ve always been a keen video gamer over the years, and although I have a significantly reduced amount of time available to me to relax and have a blast on the laptop (PC/Mac gamers ‘for the win’), I don’t really have a great deal installed on my Macbook Pro other than Far Cry 2, Team Fortress 2…and now Left 4 Dead.

The game launched last week, and after a short delay my pre-order has finally arrived. I got a few hours in on the demo and have had a couple of hours in-game since the retail launch, and I have to say it is already showing signs of being both a) a legendary, timeless title and b) something I’ll be playing an awful lot of.

University application

Well, it’s been almost a week now since the university application went out of the door. At 10:06am on Friday, November 21st my application left the college and went on its merry way to UCAS.  Just writing that is quite liberating.

I try and sell myself as a guy with no regrets, however, along with never successfully appearing on Fun House, not going to university ‘back in the day’ is one of my biggest demons and I’m not ashamed to admit it. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve a lot more work experience than your average joe/jane as a result, and back then I was interested in Business or Journalism as opposed to Film & TV; but I still feel that I’ve missed out on the experience.

Terminator Salvation Trailer

YouTube Preview Image

As a huge fan of the Terminator universe, I am looking forward to seeing the latest installment of the movie franchise. When Christian Bale was announced as the next actor to portray John Connor, I wasn’t entirely sure if he was the right man for the job; and I’m still not convinced. However, Terminator 3 was a fairly average film and even if Bale is bad as Connor, the film can’t be much worse.

Terminator Salvation, or Terminator 4 as many are referring to it as, is set a short period into the future after Judgement Day as the resistance attempts to stop the machines from claiming a total victory and wiping out all of the human race.

It’s worth noting that Terminator Salvation (and Terminator 3 for that matter) takes place in a different time line to Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles that is currently one of my favourite shows.

I’ll be back.

Merchandising!

Blogging this a few days late, but I’m delighted to report that last week, my little TARDIS won me some very nice merchandise! Let me expain…

The guys and gals over at Firebox.com run a ‘video of the week’ competition, where they judge videos that have been made and uploaded to them that feature products sold on their website. Now, last year I purchased a 4-Port TARDIS USB Hub from them around about the same time I started the Interactive Media course; due to sheer number of USB devices I had.

I then produced this short video that was essentially a little bit of fun and allowed me to experiment with my video editing software. It took no more than 20 minutes to make, using a hand-held camera and Final Cut on my Macbook Pro.

To cut to the chase, I logged back onto the site recently and saw that users could upload video content, and immediately uploaded this little TARDIS experiment. To my surprise, I received an email a few days later informing me that I had won ‘video of the week’, and as a result was given a Firebox voucher allowing me to spend a whopping fifty pounds! You can see my submission on the Firebox.com product page.

Suffice to say I am very happy, and will go ahead and make another ‘TARDIS Experiment’ in the near future; something a little trickier this time however. For those of you who are interested in what I bought with the voucher…

USBCell Batteries – These beauties are AA batteries that charge up via your spare USB slots. Brilliant!

Coin Saving Jar – This plastic jar records the total of all the coins you have slotted into it! Useful!

Bubba Keg – A 1.5 litre keg flask that keeps cold drinks cold for 12 hours, and hot ones for 3! Woo!

And finally, something not really useful but fun nonetheless…

Desktop Ballista – Medieval warfare fun in the form of a self-assembled wooden Ballista weapon! Huzzah!

So the moral of the story is…making completely random, pointless videos means more merchandise!

Good night, and good luck.

Documentary ‘I Care’

The first assignment in the second year of the Interactive Media Diploma was to produce a four minute documentary that would be suitable for broadcast over the Internet; specifically with an eye towards uploading our documentaries to the Channel 4 ‘Four Docs’ website.

I was looking forward to working on my own idea initially, however we ended up working in small teams based on a handful of the documentary treatments produced by the class were selected to be produced. Raj, my team mate and the eventual star of the film, had written a treatment about filming a care worker in a residential care home. The idea was a solid one, however we were badly let down by the senior care worker (with thirteen years experience) who refused to be filmed and interviewed at the last minute.

As a result, we had to change the whole dynamic of the film and replace the original subject with Raj himself, who also works at the home, with him playing a directing role and with the film shot by myself.

As a result of this, I don’t feel that the documentary is quite as engaging as we originally planned; although that is mostly down to the audio as we were hoping for plenty of interesting comment to be able to choose from and include. The visuals were satisfying, and the hand-held camera experience was valuable. Once again I found the editing process to be very, very enjoyable.

My main responsiblities for this assignment were camera, editing and a share of all other pre and post production.
